I didn't think it was that bad, but my sister is clearly still traumatized. I have a similar vintage processor, but it doesn't have two separate lids-- one with a spout and one without. Instead, there's just a little insert you can put into the lid to shut off the spout if you don't intend to use it. If there is a little curved hole in the lid next to the spout, that's where you'd insert the spout shutoff (or whatever you'd call it. I don't know the correct terminology!) If there's a small, seemingly-random curved thingy in with your food processor parts, that's what it's for. My guess is that it's probably lost, though. They're small, easy to lose, and it would be hard to imagine what it was for if you just saw one loose in the kitchen, so it might go in the trash or a junk drawer instead of back in with the food processor.

P.S.- I'm glad my continuing fascination with what constitutes a salad amuses you too. Sadly I don't have any cheap pie filling ideas - I know that you DEFINITELY don't want my grandma's recipe for zucchini cream pie. I still shutter at the memory of that grey green slime 25+ years later... Hopefully you get something good in the pieathlon. Of course that depends on whether you define a "good" pieathlon entry as something that is edible, or something that is completely inedible.
